According to a source close to the club, Grobler wants a fresh challenge and would relish working with Benni McCarthy.

Amazulu face stiff competition for the PSL’s leading scorer this season, but the club are on the brink of securing a place in the Caf Champions League and want to push for the Premiership title as soon as next season.

SuperSport United meanwhile are beset by rumours of a sale.

“Something is going on at SuperSport,” a source told KickOff.com.

“There are too many things that are happening that are not coincidental. All of a sudden they’ve stopped camping, they are not camping anymore. If they are playing in Johannesburg or locally, they only meet on the day of the game. They don’t stay in the hotel anymore.

“I don’t know, I suppose we can blame Covid. I think Covid has a lot to do with everything that’s going on. Grobler, he’s got some offers, there is something on the table.

“Remember, he’s proved himself in the last couple of years and even at his age he still delivers. It will make sense for SuperSport to sell their best players now so they can get money for them.

“I know Chiefs are interested but that depends on if Gavin [Hunt] is still there. If Chiefs can give Gavin another year, they will challenge for trophies next season. The problem with Chiefs supporters is they want to play pretty football but they don’t win with pretty football.

“The team is only untouchable when they play to win. To win leagues sometimes you have to play boring football and win 1-0. Grobler has always enjoyed a good relationship with Gavin, I mean Gavin was the one who brought him back to Johannesburg.

“Grobler is not young anymore, but he can still do a job for a top team like Chiefs. He’s like [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and all those type of players.

“And there’s also AmaZulu who are planning to sign him in about a month-and-a-half hey. But I think Chiefs will keep Gavin, they don’t hire and fire like a lot of clubs do.”
