AKA exclusive interview: Here’s five things we could hear
Mzansi was all geared up and tuned in for AKA’s first interview since the death of his fiancée, Anele “Nelli” Tembe… But the rapper’s exclusive sit-down interview with seasoned eNCA journalist Thembekile Mrototo, which aired on BarLeader TV’s YouTube channel on Saturday evening 22 May, fizzled out dismally.
The production quality of the interview made it difficult for viewers to actually hear what the rapper had to say about his stormy relationship with the 22-year-old Tembe who plunged to her death on 11 April from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town.
AKA’s tell-all interview not a ‘hear-all’ interview
Mrototo’s sound sufficed, but AKA seems to not have had a mic, rendering the music star’s answers to the hard-hitting questions almost inaudible.
Fans and critics of the rapper turned to Twitter to voice their frustration as this was the first time AKA was going to give his side of the story.
This after various anonymous sources have made serious allegations of abuse and infidelity, as well as shock footage of AKA breaking down a door to get to a terrified Tembe going viral on social media.
To make matters worse, the video became unavailable about 15 minutes into the promised hour-long interview with YouTube labelling it “This video has been removed by the uploader”.
Five things we managed to hear during the AKA sit-down interview:
1. AKA AND NELLI WERE TRYING TO FIX THEIR RELATIONSHIP
AKA admitted that his relationship with Nelli was weighed down by “issues”. He described the week leading up to her death as a “difficult time” in their relationship. He mentioned that being in Cape Town was a change of scenery for them and at the start of the weekend, they actually started talking about their issues.
He admits however that their conversations became heated on more than one occasion.
AKA did not go into detail about what the issues were and when asked about this, he answered that he and Nelli had issues just like any other relationship. He also said he did not think it would be fair of him to discuss these as Nelli is no longer here to defend herself.
2. AKA BOOKED ANOTHER ROOM
AKA however revealed that their arguments got so heated that he actually decided to “remove himself from the situation” by booking himself into another room at the Pepperclub Hotel.
3. ARGUING UNTIL EARLY HOURS IN THE MORNING
Despite this, AKA admitted that he and Nelli we’re arguing from when they returned to the hotel after his performance until the early hours of the morning.
4. AKA WAS IN THE BATHROOM WHEN NELLI FELL TO HER DEATH
AKA confirmed that he was in fact in their suite (and not the other room) when Nelli plunged to her death from the balcony. He was however in the bathroom at the time.
“When I came out of the bathroom, she wasn’t, wasn’t in the room and uhhmm, so then I look around and she’s not there,” said AKA.
“(I) look over the balcony out on the street and that’s where she was,” he added.
AKA also mentioned that he had called hotel security because he wanted to “remove himself from the situation”.
5. ‘I AM NOT AN ABUSER’
AKA addressed the footage of himself breaking down a door to get to Nelli Tembe that went viral sparking abuse claims. He admitted that he understands what it looks like and he also understands how scared Nelli must have been. He then proceeded to say that he is not an abuser.
“I know what I am not, I am not an abuser.”
Teaser clips of the interview were leaked on the Mgosi website on Thursday. In one of these clips, AKA said that his ex-girlfriend and mother of his child, DJ Zinhle, was also questioned by police in the inquest of Nelli’s death.
Following the outcry on social media after the interview video became unavailable, BarLeader TV’s founder Legend Manqele tweeted that a new video with better sound would be uploaded. However, at the time of writing this article, when was still a mystery to the disappointed viewers.
