What’s Gone Viral: Mrs Sri Lanka beauty queen’s crown ‘snatched’ on stage [video]

A Sri Lankan beauty pageant has been mired in controversy after the reigning Mrs World snatched the crown off the local winner’s head as she was receiving the crown.

Beauty queen’s crown ‘snatched’ on stage

According to 7News.com, moments after Pushpika De Silva crowned Mrs World Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday, 4 April 2021, reigning Mrs World Caroline Jurie – the 2019 Sri Lankan winner – caused quite a ruckus on stage.

She announced that the new winner was disqualified and was not allowed to hold the title as she is a divorcee.

“There is a rule that you have to be married and not divorced,” Jurie said. “So, I am taking my first steps saying that the crown goes to the first runner up.”

Jurie is then seen walking over to De Silva and removing the crown off her head, before crowning the first runner up. De Silva was seen walking off stage following the confrontation and was later treated in hospital for after she suffered head injuries from the incident.

Taking back her crown

Organisers of the pageant later gave De Silva back her crown and clarified she was not divorced.

“There are a lot of single mums like me today who are suffering in Sri Lanka,” De Silva said at a press conference, BBC reports. “This crown is dedicated to those women, those single mums who are suffering to raise their kids alone.”

De Silva added she would take legal action over the “insulting” way she was treated. The Mrs World international body also said it would take action against Jurie over her behaviour:

We are disappointed,” the national director of Mrs Sri Lanka World, Chandimal Jayasinghe said, adding: “It was a disgrace how Caroline Jurie behaved on the stage and the Mrs World organisation has already begun an investigation on the matter.”
