Veteran ‘Generations’ actor Menzi Ngubane dies aged 56

Various news outlets are reporting that Menzi Ngubane has sadly passed away, aged 56. The veteran actor was known for long-running roles on Generations, Yizo-Yizo and Isibaya.

According to the actor’s family, Ngubane suffered a stroke on Saturday morning, 13 March 2021. He is survived by his wife Sikelelwa and two daughters.

The actor’s portrayal of Generations villain Sibusiso Dlomo graced South African screens for more than a decade and won him a place in a generation of South African’s hearts.

Family spokesperson Naomi Mokhele also said they “wish to mourn the passing of [their] beloved son in private and will communicate the funeral and other arrangements in due course”.

“As a family, we wish to thank everyone for their continued and sustained support and the prayers for our beloved son, whose battle with kidney failure & sugar diabetes had become an open secret over the years”.

The actor spoke to East Coast Radio in 2018 about his battle with kidney failure, which left him on the list waiting for a kidney transplant.

South Africans react to the news

The news of his passing came a shock to many. One netizen, Thokozani Nala said Ngubane was “arguably the best male actor of his generation”, while Miss Lelo tweeted:

“Menzi Ngubane, what a legendary actor. Siyabulela bhuti for sharing your talent with us. The character, Mazwi was my first introduction to him, iconic!”
