Silvermine Dam closes while search party for missing hiker resumes

SANParks on Thursday 25 March confirmed that Table Mountain National Park’s (TMNP) Silvermine Dam will be closed to the public until further notice. Here’s what you need to know.

Silvermine Dam is a popular spot for a post-hike swim or a picnic, however, a level-one My Activity Permit is required.

Why is Silvermine Dam closing to the public?

SANParks said in a statement that a search operation for a 69-year-old male regular hiker is currently underway. The hiker, who has yet to be named, went missing on Sunday 21 March.

“The South African Police Services (SAPS) Diving Unit, Metro Rescue Unit, TMNP Rangers and Working on Fire team are currently conducting a search operation in and around Silvermine”.

Following several days of unsuccessful searches, authorities will now extend the search to other areas of the park. Officials call on the public to be patient during this time. Only the dam is closed, other parts of the park remain open.

Missing hiker

The hiker’s clothes were found at Silvermine Dam and his car – with his wallet and other personal items – were found nearby. However, a source revealed that his car key was still missing.

His wife filed a missing person’s report when he didn’t return on Sunday from a mid-afternoon trip to the dam.

When hiking at Table Mountain National Park, always keep the following emergency numbers at the ready: 086 110 6417, as well as 086 110 6107 or 021 480 7700. Any criminal incidents must be reported to the nearest police station.
