Retired SA shotstopper says Bafana Bafana have a goalkeeper crisis

Shu-Aib Walters feels that South Africa is in the midst of a goalkeeper crisis.

The 39-year-old retired shotstopper spent well over a decade playing at the top level for the likes of Maritzburg United, Blomfontein Celtic and Cape Town City.

With veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, Ronwen Williams and Veli Mothwa currently in the national frame, Walters has questioned who the next bright talent coming through might be.

Walters, who was part of the Bafana Bafana 2010 Soccer World Cup squad, told Kickoff, “We definitely have a keeper crisis.

“I’ve been saying this for the three years. Who is our next Khune, where is he coming from, what happens if Ronwen gets injured?

“But if you look you have [Golden] Arrows keeper Sfiso Mlungwana and [Darren] Johnson from Ajax (Cape Town Spurs). Are they good enough or ready?

“It’s going to take time but we not investing enough resources in developing the younger generation of keepers.”
