Mamelodi Sundowns closing in on TWO Kaizer Chiefs PSL records

Mamelodi Sundowns’ last-gasp 2-1 DStv Premiership win over Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday means they are now only two matches away from equalling one of Kaizer Chiefs’ top-flight records.

After 17 matches in the season, Mamelodi Sundowns are the only club yet to taste defeat.

In those matches, the Brazilians have won 11 and drawn six for a points total of 39.

That sees them four points clear of second-placed Golden Arrows who have played two more matches than Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Chloorkop side have now matched Orlando Pirates’ second-best 17-game unbeaten start in the 2004/05 season.

Mamelodi Sundowns will now set their sights on the longest start without defeat ever recorded in PSL history which was achieved by Kaizer Chiefs in the 2014/15 season.

Amakhosi went 19 league matches unbeaten that season before they came unstuck against SuperSport United in match No 20.

However, they would still go on to be crowned champions at the end of that season and lost just three league matches in total under coach Stuart Baxter.

Another Kaizer Chiefs record that Mamelodi Sundowns will have one eye on is that of the fewest number of defeats in a season.

Amakhosi currently hold that record from the 2004/05 season when the Soweto giants lost just twice on their way to being crowned champions under the late Ted Dumitru.

Mamelodi Sundowns have 13 matches remaining this league season and if they manage to avoid defeat in all of those then they will become South Africa’s first ever ‘Invincibles’.

Barring any late changed to their schedule, Mamelodi Sundowns are due to play lowly Black Leopards at home on Sunday, 21 March followed by an away fixture against Tshakhuma FC on Tuesday, 6 April.

Should they avoid defeat in those matches, Mamelodi Sundowns will tie Kaizer Chiefs’ all-time record for an unbeaten start to a season.

The match to break that record will take place away to Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu on Wednesday, 21 April.
