King Goodwill Zwelithini confirmed dead: Tributes pour in for Zulu King

It has been confirmed that King Goodwill Zwelithini, the Zulu King, has passed away on Friday morning. The long-serving Royal Leader has lost his battle with a persistent illness, plunging traditional communities into a deep state of mourning.

RIP King Goodwill Zwelithini – what was the cause of death?

He was the longest-serving Zulu monarch – his reign lasted over 50 years. The King was diabetic and he has been in hospital since last month, after his glucose levels shot up. Mangothusu Buthelezi of the IFP issued the following statement:

“It is with the utmost grief that I announce the passing of King Goodwill Zwelithini. Tragically, while still in hospital, his Majesty’s health took a turn for the worse and he subsequently passed away in the early hours of this morning. On behalf of the Royal Family, we thank the nation for your continued prayers and support in this most difficult time.”

SA loses “a source of invaluable guidance”

Fears about his health had been raised last month, when he was admitted to an ICU unit in KwaZulu-Natal. King Goodwill Zwelithini missed out on the State of the Province Address this year, and was sorely missed by the House:

“On Tuesday 23rd February the Speaker received a formal letter informing the Legislature that, on medical advice, His Majesty will not be able to address the House. We value the pivotal role played by His Majesty. As the Legislature, we work extremely well with His Majesty and recognise that the guidance and counsel he provides is invaluable.”
