Kaizer Chiefs | How Gavin Hunt’s stats compare to previous coaches

Gavin Hunt is under immense pressure to turn things around at Kaizer Chiefs as results and performances are still not improving.

With just a handful of matches left before the end of the season, Chiefs find themselves lingering in the bottom half of the DStv Premiership table.

In addition, Chiefs are most likely to finish the season empty-handed after being bundled out of both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.

Their African safari isn’t going according to plan, and after Sunday’s heavy defeat to Wydad Casablanca, chances of them going all the way in the CAF Champions League are non-existent.

And there are growing calls for Hunt to resign or at worst for the Chiefs management to sack him.

Of course, there are reasons Chiefs have done this badly thus far but that’s a topic for another day.

For now, let’s take a look at Hunt’s stats since taking over from Ernst Middendorp in October 2020, and compare them with those of the three previous coaches at Chiefs.

It is worth mentioning that Hunt is Amakhosi’s fourth coach since June 2015 – when Chiefs had just won a league and Cup double under the tutelage of Stuart Baxter.

Baxter’s stats are incomparable looking at how those who came after his departure fared as head coaches of Chiefs.

He was in charge of 110 competitive matches, won 66, drew 25 and lost just 19 during his three-year tenure. Baxter won four major trophies for Chiefs during that time.

STEVE KOMPHELA

Komphela inherited a squad that had just lifted two major trophies at Chiefs and while his first season came with two Cup final appearances, he still won nothing.

He was in charge of 112 competitive matches for the Glamour Boys; and his tenure came to an abrupt end when fans at Moses Mabhida Stadium forced to him resign in April 2018.

Of the 112 matches, Komphela won 47, drew 38 and lost 27. Chiefs scored 148 goals and conceded 116 during Komphela’s tenure.

GIOVANNI SOLINAS

The appointment of Solinas before the start of the 2018-19 season was met with huge criticism, and those who were against his arrival were proven right as Chiefs struggled to take off under the Italian’s watchful eye.

He was asked to step aside 20 games into the season after recording seven wins, seven draws and suffering six defeats.

At the time, Chiefs had already conceded 21 goals and scored 27 goals. Solinas was replaced by Middendorp in December 2018.

ERNST MIDDENDORP

Middendorp took charge of 60 competitive matches, and while he came close to delivering the league title, he was still sacked.

He left having won 31 of the 60 matches, drawn 12 and lost 17 – and to the Chiefs management, this wasn’t good enough.

Under Middendorp, Chiefs scored 101 goals and conceded just 66.

GAVIN HUNT

Hunt is closing in on his 30th game in charge since taking over from Middendorp at Chiefs.

And things aren’t looking pretty for him because he’s just won seven of the 27 matches he has overseen thus far.

He has recorded 10 draws and suffered 10 defeats. Chiefs have conceded a whopping 32 goals while scoring just 22 in the process.

And it is one of the reasons some fans want him gone sooner rather than later even with his pedigree as a serial winner.
