Cop killer hands himself in after intense Johannesburg manhunt

An alleged Alexander cop-killer handed himself over to the police this week.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili said the 52-year-old suspect had allegedly killed a police sergeant on Tuesday.

“The Management of the South African Police Service has welcomed the report that a suspect who is  allegedly responsible for the killing of Sergeant Moshela Mokgoba last night in Alexander has this afternoon, handed himself over to the police at the Johannesburg Police Station,” Muridili said.

Policeman was gunned down while on duty

She said Sergeant Mokgobo was on duty when he was killed in Alexander on Tuesday just before 7pm in the evening.

“It was reported that the sergeant and colleagues were following a suspicious vehicle when the vehicle in question got stuck in traffic on 3rd street near Pan African Mall,” Muridili said.

:Sergeant Mokgobo and a colleague approached the vehicle on foot when shots were fired at them by the occupant. The sergeant was shot and he immediately succumbed to his injuries,” Muridili said.

Resources focused on catching cop killer

Muridili said the Gauteng provincial SAPS had immediately initiated its 72-hour activation plan, which entailed the mobilisation of all the necessary resources needed to urgently investigate the incident. 

“The 52-year-old suspect sensed the net was closing in on him, forcing him to hand himself over to police. He will appear in court soon on charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery of a firearm and discharging a firearm in a municipal area,” Muridili said.

Muridili urged the public to report any information on crime to the SAPS. Crime tip-offs may be communicated anonymously to the SAPS Crime Stop number on 086 00 10111 or via the MySAPSApp.
