Gerrard will resist all Premier League suitors with Liverpool offer on the horizon
Former Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is rumoured to be the Reds first choice to replace Jurgen Klopp as boss.
Gerrard is on the cusp of leading Rangers to their first title Scottish Premier League title in ten years and has also guided the club into the last 16 of the Europa League.
Reds legend to reject all others
Such is the bond between Liverpool and Gerrard that it really wouldn’t take much for a large portion of fans to get behind the drive to have the Scouse legend installed as manager.
Klopp is considered the hot tip to replace Joachim Low as the coach of the German national team, and also finds himself under pressure as Liverpool seem to have tamely surrendered in their title defence and will struggle to make the top four.
Low is himself under intense scrutiny and may not press through to the end of his contract which takes in the 2022 World Cup. A poor performance by Germany at the European Championships could see Low removed and leave Liverpool scrambling to replace Klopp.
With that in mind, Liverpool have begun the process of lining up Gerrard to replace according to The Mirror. Liverpool’s principal owner John W. Henry and chairman Tom Werner have been following Gerrard’s work at Rangers with interest. Under Gerrard Rangers have taken the final steps to once again being a force in Scottish football, so long dominated by Celtic. Shattering the Hoops quest for an historic tenth consecutive title with a dominant display.
There is an obvious gulf in quality between the SPL and the mega-rich English Premier League, and Gerrard would need to keep pace with some of the keenest footballing minds in the world. As a result there are many Liverpool fans who are skeptical of what could be perceived as a rushed move driven by sentiment.
Gerrard among the doubters
Among those who are cautious is Gerrard himself, who said this week he would have to be convinced the owners thought he was the best man for the job before he took charge.
“I understand why (people expect him to succeed Klopp) because I was captain for so long and a large chunk of the fanbase would like me back at the club,” he told The Mail on Sunday.
“But I’m bright enough to realise that, first and foremost, you have to be good enough. The owners need to think you’re the right man.”
