RIP | Former SA football administrator Abdul Bhamjee dies

Legendary South African football administrator Abdul Bhamjee has died.

He was 83.

Abdul Bhamjee, who died on Monday night after being ill for some time, was one of the founders of the National Soccer League (NSL) when it broke away from the old National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) in 1985.

The NSL was the precursor to the current Premier Soccer League (PSL)‚ and tapped into the potential of sponsorship and television broadcast revenue more effectively than at any stage to that point.

As Public Relations Officer‚ Bhamjee, known as ‘Mr Soccer’, was renowned for the excitement and hype he brought to the new league.

Bhamjee’s funeral was due to take place at Westpark Cemetery in Montgomery Park‚ Johannesburg on Tuesday morning

The initial 78 000-seater FNB Stadium‚ which was built from 1986-1989 in Nasrec‚ is credited as having been his brainchild.

Veteran media man Tim Modise tweeted: “It feels like death notices are now a deluge. Abdul Bhamjee was a very important and colourful personality who brought the ‘Razzmatazz’ to football and turned it into an entertainment fiesta. He left his mark and I send condolences to his family.”

The South African would like to express its condolences to family and friends of Abdul Bhamjee.
