‘The Next Star’ winner makes comeback as dark-pop princess Faangs

Faangs is actually The Next Star season four winner Melissa “Charlie” Storwick, who has reinvented herself as sassy-savage, dark-pop princess Faangs.

Storwick is back with a bite as the 21-year-old recently released Huh, her newest song off her upcoming debut album titled Teeth Out.

How the name Faangs stuck

Since winning the Canadian reality talent show back in 2011, the singer-songwriter has been on a journey of discovery to find herself as an artist. This resulted in her reinventing herself under the Faangs persona.

The name Faangs came from a text message in which she had described her impression of the city of Los Angeles in the US when she was 17, paired with feeling like she had vampire tendencies because of her pale skin and hating the sun.

“It was my first trip to LA, I was 17 years old, by myself, and I was so overwhelmed by the size and energy of the city,” Storwich told Medium.

“I felt like I could go everywhere and nowhere with the power of LA. I texted my friend to vent about how terrified I was and said: ‘This city doesn’t have teeth, it has fangs’.”

Storwich was the first contestant from The Next Star to reach a million views on YouTube for her single Good as Gone.

Faangs’s crazy signature style

One of Faangs’s most notable features is her attention-grabbing style. She is described as having a savage take on pop music and is seen by others as a dark-pop princess.

In the Y2K-inspired music video of Huh she wears a burnt orange wig with a full black outfit, and dark black hair with a bright green outfit. Faangs is a genius at pairing bright and dark colours to create her signature style, of course with the addition of animal print.

Upcoming album ‘Teeth Out’ expected to be dark

Huh is the first taste Faangs has given fans of what the new album might hold. The song follows her appearance on the German DJ Felix Jaehn’s Sicko single. The album itself is expected to be dark, with a more radical take, and her lyrical style is similar to that of the American singer Billie Eilish.

Storwick told Medium she had been inspired by a weird combination of things – unconventional fashion, sad songs, film photography, Tim Burton movies, other people’s life stories and the pain she had been through in life.
