Listen to the Daily News Wrap, Thursday 17 December
This is the Daily News Wrap from The South African – bringing you all the news you really need to know on 17 December 2020.
If you’re hoping for a swift ending to this pandemic in South Africa, this probably isn’t the news you want to see. A leading public health researcher has suggested that the vaccine may not be rolled out properly on our shores until ‘the second half of 2020’. This would mean that we are, at least, six months away from any sort of return to normality.
Safura Abdool Karim said this week that a delay in securing ‘national approval’ for the jabs could hold South Africa back. If that name sounds familiar to you, it’s because she is the daughter of SA’s leading epidemiologist and COVID-19 analyst, Salim Abdool Karim.
Both are amongst the top experts in their field, and Safura is well-known for her medical insights.
Meanwhile, Bheki Cele embarked on a nine-stop beach tour of Cape Town during Wednesday’s public holiday, as he carried out spot-checks for COVID-19 compliance. Following a serene morning in False Bay, the police minister showed up at Camps Bay, where the temperature increased slightly during his impromptu patrol.
