South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Monday 9 November
After a weekend in which a new US President was elected, most people have remained glued to the news. A new week is upon us though, and while we’l keep track of the reaction and fallout from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ historic victory over incumbent President Donald Trump, we’ve also got all the latest news in South Africa to share with you.
TODAY’S LATEST NEWS IN SOUTH AFRICA, Monday 9 November
Ramaphosa to address the nation this week
Following a briefing on the outcomes of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) meetings with cabinet last week, it was announced that the nation would be hearing from President Cyril Ramaphosa this week to learn what the latest plan of action is regarding the pandemic, lockdown, and economic recovery.
We’ll keep you up to date on when exactly Ramaphosa will speak to the nation in what Minister in the Presidency described as a “family meeting”, and keep tabs on how lockdown regulations and the state of disaster is going to change as a result.
State Capture Commission continues
Last week, the State Capture Commission was the centre of dumbfounding testimony that severely tested the patience of Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. Testimony from “delinquent director” Dudu Myeni and other SAA board members left South Africa’s totally bewildered as all failed to properly answer questions and some even managed to further implicate themselves and others.
This week, the commission will hear Denel related testimony from the Former Chief Financial Officer of Denel Land System, Mr Pieter Knoetze, on Monday at 10:00. The Commission will also hear testimony of the Acting Group Executive Supply Chain and Acquisition at Armscor, Mr Sipho Mkwanazi and Former Denel Group Chief Financial Officer, Mr Fikile Mhlontlo.
US Elections: Fireworks and fallout
With former Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, having successfully negotiated a resounding victory in the US Elections, America – and the rest of the world for that matter – have entered a new era. While millions celebrated the Democrat victory, democracy itself has found itself under siege, with runner up and incumbent President Donald Trump having declined to concede the election in favour of launching a spree of legal campaigns and accusations that suggest that the vote was rigged.
One would be excused for feeling somewhat anxious about the manner in which power is set to be passed on, and there’s no doubt that the fireworks on display in Biden’s Delaware hometown on Saturday night wont be the last.
Parliament to hear from Ramaphosa, De Lille
In addition to a briefing of the nation at some stage this week, Ramaphosa is also set to appear in Parliament to answer oral questions relating to matters of national importance.
Parliament is set to see Public Works Minister deliver an update on the progress achieved in implementing the infrastructure plan laid out in October. The economic cluster, including the Departmental heads of Public Enterprises, Transport, Small Business Development, and Tourism set to feature.
