International travel: Western Cape government welcomes further reopening
Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address on Wednesday night 11 November 2020, Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities David Maynier released a statement lauding the president for the further reopening of international travel.
Ramaphosa said that international travel will be open to all “countries subject to the necessary health protocols and the presentation of a negative COVID-19 certificate”.
“We expect that the measures we are going to take will greatly assist businesses; particularly in the tourism and hospitality sectors. We are focusing relentlessly on the implementation of our plan,” he added.
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL: WESTERN CAPE GOVERNMENT PLEASED WITH DECISION
Maynier said he welcomes the announcement by Ramaphosa that the “red list” will be scrapped and international travel to all countries will resume, subject to the necessary health protocols and the presentation of a negative COVID-19 certificate.
“We have been calling for the ‘red list’ to be scrapped from day one, as it was killing our key source markets for tourism in the Western Cape ahead of the summer season and causing much confusion and uncertainty for the travel and tourism industry which has been hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Maynier.
“The relaxation of the restrictions on alcohol sale will also be welcomed by the wine tourism sector who will now be able to resume cellar door sales on weekends,” he added.
SAVING JOBS IN THE PROVINCE
Now that there is more opportunity around international travel, Maynier said government will continue to support businesses in the Western Cape, especially tourism businesses so that jobs in the province can be saved as the country looks toward economic recovery.
“We know times are tough, but if you can, please go out and support our businesses in the Western Cape, particularly those in the tourism and hospitality sector,” said Maynier.
“We can do this simply by enjoying the natural beauty, award-winning food and wine, rich cultural heritage and diverse and affordable travel options available to all in the Western Cape. And please remember to do so safely,” he added.
Maynier said the summer season is an important time for celebration and festivities with families and friends, even more so after a difficult year. He did, however, maintain that adherence to the health and safety guidelines is standard procedure to protect yourself and loved ones.
“Together we will stay safe and we will move forward in the Western Cape,” he added.
