Makhaya Ntini is breaking the internet and trending on social media at the moment after The South African reported that he wouldn’t coach the Proteas because current Cricket South Africa (CSA) director of cricket Graeme Smith would never call on him to do so.

Ntini, a former Proteas fast bowler, revealed he still wants to coach at the highest level, but doesn’t think it will be with his native South Africa.

And this is reportedly because Smith ‘doesn’t like stubborn people’, Makhaya Ntini said.

How well do you really know the 43-year-old Makhaya Ntini?

1. He was born on 6 July 1977 in Mdingi near King William’s Town.

2. Makhaya Ntini played 101 Tests, 173 ODIs and 10 T20Is for South Africa.

3. He took 390 Test wickets which places him third on the all-time Proteas list behind Dale Steyn (439) and Shaun Pollock (421).

4. Makhaya Ntini’s best Test bowling figures of 13/132 against the West Indies in Port-of-Spain in 2008 is the best return for a South African in history.

5. He bowled a total of 20 834 balls in Test cricket – the second-most for South Africa behind Shaun Pollock (24 353).

6. Makhaya Ntini’s highest score with the bat in Test cricket is 32 not out and 42 not out in ODIs (and five in T20Is).

7. His final Test came against England in the Boxing Day Test in Durban in 2009.

8. Makhaya Ntini also played county cricket for Kent and Warwickshire and for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

9. He had a controversial career in several respects having been charged with and then convicted of rape in 1999, although he was ultimately acquitted. In recent months he claimed other Proteas players would not sit with him during meals and confirmed he used to run to the stadium and back to hotels to avoid being lonely on the team bus.

10. Makhaya Ntini previously coached Zimbabwe, but resigned in January 2018.
