‘Hail, floods… and flying debris’: Weather warnings in place for five provinces
It’s not often the South African Weather Service (Saws) will issue warnings quite like these. The experts have predicted Tuesday will be a tumultuous day for those in the northerly and eastern regions of Mzansi, with five provinces – including Gauteng – set for a lashing from the forecast thunderstorms.
Where have weather warnings been issued on Tuesday 24 November?
A Yellow L2 weather warning was issued earlier this morning. This will be in force from 11:00 onwards. The storms are set to make landfall just before midday, persisting throughout the first few hours of Tuesday afternoon, in these regions:
- North West (far east)
- Gauteng (all)
- Free State (north-east)
- Mpumalanga (southern Highveld)
- KwaZulu-Natal (north-west)
Everything from ‘flying debris’ to ‘property damage’ forecast – with Gauteng back in the firing line
It’s not just the threat of heavy downpours and localised flooding that has Saws spooked, however. They believe this latest bout of extreme weather has the potential to damage infrastructure, cause carnage within settlements, and even create ‘flying debris’ once the winds pick up.
Gauteng, which was battered severely by the wild conditions reported on Friday, must face the fury of Mother Nature once more over the next 12-24 hours. We will bring you updates on the storms and their projected impact throughout the day.
“A Yellow L2 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms that can result in possible hail leading to localized damage to vehicles, damaging winds, and heavy downpours that may result in localized flooding with damage to infrastructure and settlements (formal and informal) as well as localized injuries due to flying debris.”
“This is likely to occur over the extreme east of North West, north-eastern Free State, Gauteng, southern Highveld of Mpumalanga as well as northern and north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.”
