Breaking: Ex-Bafana Bafana star Anele Ngcongca dies in car crash

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Anele Ngcongca, aged 33, has been confirmed dead on Monday – after the ex-Bafana Bafana defender was involved in a car crash in KwaZulu-Natal.

Details remain sketchy at this point, but it’s understood the accident occurred in Umlazi. The vehicle was found on a grass verge just off the N2. Rescue teams arrived at the scene shortly after the crash took place, but unfortunately, they were unable to save Ngcongca and he was pronounced dead earlier this morning.

The career of Anene Ngcongca

Anele Ngcongca made over 300 appearances at the highest levels of European football, turning out in the top flights of Belgium and France respectively. He won both the Belgian League and Cup with Genk during his nine-year stay with the club, who made their first Champions League appearance in 2012.

He joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016, electing to return home following a brief loan spell at Troyes in Ligue 1. He won the lot under Pitso Mosimane, claiming three domestic accolades in the process: He lifted the PSL trophy, the Nedbank Cup, and the Telkom Knockout Cup during his four years in Tshwane, scoring once in 42 appearances.
