Senzo Meyiwa murder suspects to appear in court

The five suspects linked to the killing of footballer Senzo Meyiwa are expected to make an appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

The men were arrested on Monday, coincidentally on the sixth anniversary of Meyiwa’s death, in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was fatally shot on 26 October 2014 in Vosloorus, at the home of his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo.

The arrests come after reports had claimed police had made a breakthrough in the case, but law enforcement was mum on the alleged development. The Minister of Police Bheki Cele is confident that they’ve got a solid case. They were as a result of a multi-disciplinary integrated approach to the investigation.

National Police Commissioner: ‘We have found the murder weapon’

Cele along with National Commissioner General Khehla Sitole, made the announcement in a media briefing.

“We have been looking for the weapon since the investigation started. We have now found the weapon and it has been ballistically tested. We have a concrete case this time because it has evidence,”

While the arrests indicate progress in the case, there are still more questions than answers, including who the suspects are.

Sitole said two of the suspects were inside the house on that fateful day. According to initial reports, Meyiwa, Kelly, her sister Zandi, their mother as well as Meyiwa’s friends Mthokozisi Thwala and Tumelo Madlala, were all together.

Sitole has also said police would be making more arrests.

Afriforum: Senzo Meyiwa was assassinated

Another crucial aspect in the matter was a revelation by Afriforum, who announced in a subsequent press briefing that Meyiwa was not killed in a botched robbery, but was actually assassinated.

“And we agree, that having gone through the evidence that this is a hit and we’ve also indicated our full cooperation in exposing the mastermind and ensuring that the mastermind is also prosecuted,” he said.

The head of the lobby group’s prosecution unit, Gerrie Nel said the mastermind was still at large.

“They have not addressed the mastermind behind this assassination and that must be the most important aspect in this matter and we will, as far as we can, assist the South African Police Service and other roleplayers to make sure it happens”
