Owen Da Gama refutes ‘Mamelodi Sundowns fruit salad’ comments

Former Highlands Park mentor Owen Da Gama has warned the public against a fake interview of his doing the rounds on social media.

Da Gama found himself trending on social media after being accused of referring to the Mamelodi Sundowns coaching trio of Manqoba Mngqithi, Rhulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela as a ‘fruit salad’ he would not like to be apart of.

Da Gama was alleged to be on the shortlist for a vacancy at Mamelodi Sundowns however the shrewd comments making the rounds on social media left a bitter taste for football lovers in the country and the former Bafana Bafana assistant coach has since provided clarity on the matter.

I did not say those words – Owen Da Gama

“This is not true, I did not say that. I congratulated Sundowns on the appointment of coaches Manqoba Mngqithi, Rhulani Mokwena and Steve Khompela.” – Da Gama told Kick-Off.

“This will bring continuity, stability and experience to the Sundowns team. I don’t know who comes up with these false sayings that I supposedly said.”

ODG pleased to see South African coaches prospering

While Da Gama may be unemployed following his departure from Highlands Park, the 59-year-old coach has expressed his pleasure over the fact that South African coaches are being given top roles at clubs.

Da Gama also expressed his joy over South African coaches taking to the international stage following Pitso Mosimane and Cavin Johnson’s departure to Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

“As my fellow South African coaches I am positive that they will maintain and even go further with Sundowns.” Da Gama added.

“To crown it, the historic move of coaches Pitso Mosimane and Cavin Johnson shows how good our local coaches are. May God bless them all and give the prosperity.”

Mamelodi Sundowns will be pleased with their performance in their opening DStv Premiership clash over the weekend. Pressure at Chloorkop will be eased following their early MTN8 exit at the hands of Bloemfontein Celtic last weekend.
