Birthday wishes pour in for Archbishop Desmond Tutu as he turns 89
Archbishop Desmond Tutu is celebrating his 89th birthday on Wednesday 7 October 2020. Known for his outstanding contribution to the country, many have taken the time to express kind words to the Arch on his birthday. Not only is he a Nobel Peace Prize laureate but he is also known for his fearless work as anti-apartheid activist and human rights activist.
DESMOND TUTU TURNS 89
According to nobelprize.org, Tutu was born in 1931 in Klerksdorp, Transvaal. After leaving school he trained first as a teacher at Pretoria Bantu Normal College and in 1954 he graduated from the University of South Africa. After three years as a high school teacher he began to study theology, being ordained as a priest in 1960.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, on Wednesday, extended his warmest congratulations to Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
“Archbishop Tutu is a national treasure and global icon of moral consistency, spiritual virtue and the defence of the most vulnerable people not only in South Africa but around the world. Today we are united in celebrating the passing of another year in which we have benefited from the Archbishop’s wisdom, the bravery of his conviction in fighting for human rights, the warmth of his love for all South Africans and his care for humanity,” said Ramaphosa.
“I wish Archbishop Tutu a very happy birthday in the company of Mama Leah, the family and colleagues in the Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation,” he added.
WELL WISHES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP
The Nelson Mandela Foundation took to Twitter on Wednesday saying that Tutu’s compassion continues to inspire its work.
“Today marks the 89th birthday of human rights activist, and paragon of peace, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. We honour your lifelong dedication to humanity and the cause of justice and reconciliation,” it said.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde also paid tribute to one of South Africa’s legends saying; “Today we celebrate the birthday of one of our most loved Western Cape residents, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Happy birthday, Arch! Thank you for the tolerance, kindness and love you have shared around the world.”
The University of the Western Cape also paid tribute to its chancellor of more than 25 years.
“Happy 89th Birthday, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu! Archbishop Tutu, served as Chancellor of the University for more than 25 years, helping UWC be an intellectual home of the left while providing a moral compass for the nation.”
