Supersport United confirms departure of three more players

Supersport United has parted ways with three more players, the club confirmed on Friday.

This brings the number of first-team players released by the three-time PSL champions to four, having recently let go of midfielder Thabo Mnyamane.

The three released this time around are midfielder Thabo Qalinge and reserve goalkeepers Thakasani Mbanjwa and Thato Lesuma.

Out of the trio, it is only the former Orlando Pirates midfielder who managed to grab some minutes for the first team during the 2019/20 season.

The 28-year-old made the move from the Buccaneers at the beginning of the campaign, but only made two brief cameos throughout the season.

He again finds himself without a club, despite once being touted as one of South Africa’s brightest talents.

Qalinge’s career has been a stop-start affair, mostly due to persistent injuries, which he carried into his short spell at United.

According to coach Kaitano Tembo, fitness issues have played a part in his lack of game time.

“For me, the main issue with Thabo is that he never really got going with us because of injuries. When he arrived, he had an ankle injury and it took him time to really get an opportunity to play,” Tembo explained to the SA Football Journalists’ Association.

“At the same time, we’ve had other players in his position also doing well, so it was a little bit difficult for him, which also frustrated him because he wanted to play. But he really just couldn’t get going because of the injuries.”

More PSL free agents

All four players released by the club over the past week will not be able to register with another club until the season, which is set to resume in the coming weeks, is concluded.

Earlier in the week, United bid farewell to Mnyamane, who had been posted in Tshwane for the duration of his professional career, turning out for the University of Pretoria before making the move to the club’s city rivals.

Matsatsansa are third in the league standings, eight points behind log-leaders Kaizer Chiefs.
