COVID-19 latest: Death toll inches just short of 4 000
The number of COVID-19 cases in South Africa has risen by 13 497, with the death toll hitting 3 971 as of Saturday 11 July, according to the latest update issued out by the national health department.
This places the country among the states recording the highest number of infections over a 24-hour period across the globe.

The latest figures mean that South Africa has a total of 264 184 known cases of the novel virus, after 2 108 150 tests conducted in the country since the pandemic broke out.
With that, comes 127 715 recoveries, meaning that 136 469 of the recorded COVID-19 cases are still active, with Gauteng still the country’s epicentre with 93 044 total infections and only 29 038 recoveries.

Coronavirus deaths across the world
Over half a million people across the globe have succumbed from ailments associated with COVID-19 since the pandemic broke out in late 2019.
To date, close to 40 countries have each recorded more than 1 000 coronavirus-related fatalities.
Holding the distinction of being the country with the most deaths from COVID-19 is the United States with more than a fifth of the reported fatalities worldwide.
Despite hitting 4 000 deaths, South Africa is now at 23rd place worldwide in terms of fatalities. This is despite recording one of the highest death tolls in the world over the past 24 hours.
