Watch: Scramble for cash after CIT van ‘bombed’ in Joburg

A video posted to social media on Wednesday 3 June, shows the scene after a CIT van was allegedly bombed in Johannesburg. 

In the video, people can be seen running around the scene frantically picking up what appears to be cash on the ground. 

The caption of the video, shared by Yusuf Abramjee, says that the incident took place on Kagiso Drive Chamdor in Johannesburg. It said the cash van was bombed. 

“Robbers made off in a white Audi, white BMW X5 and a white 3 series. Grey Mercedes Benz used to ram the money truck. Look at how members of the public go for what’s left…”

Lieutenant Colonel Brenda Muridilli said she could confirm the incident and the fact that it took place on Wednesday but she did not have a report as yet, which means she could not verify details like how the incident came about and who was involved.

WHAT CAN BE SEEN IN THE VIDEO 

In the first video, what appears to be a Mercedes Benz can be seen on fire. People can be seen running around the scene, picking up what appears to be cash notes on the ground. 

What appears to be a R100 note can be seen before a woman runs past the camera and picks it up. Other people in the distance can also be seen running towards the scene. One man can be seen holding his backpack open while walking around. 

The second video that was posted shows the Mercedes Benz burning and what’s left of the CIT van not too far away. The back of the CIT van is basically non-existent. 

What looks like a police van can be seen in the distance. At this stage, it cannot be confirmed if there were any fatalities, injuries or arrests.

HAWKS SEARCH FOR CIT ‘ROBBERS’

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), on 7 May, requested the assistance of the public in the identification of a group of armed robbers who allegedly robbed an SBV CIT truck of an undisclosed amount of money on 29 August 2019 in Kriel, Mpumalanga.

It is alleged SBV security guards were loading cash into an auto teller machine when they were suddenly confronted by an unknown number of heavily armed suspects wearing uniforms similar to theirs.   

The CIT crew was forced to open the armoured vehicle vault while being threatened with explosives. In the process, one crew member was shot twice. He luckily survived the attack. Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating officer Captain Thembi-Nkosi Nkambule on 082-303-9872.
