Drink In Health This Winter With A Luscious Fruit Smoothie For Breakfast

Fruit contains a variety of vitamins and minerals and is a great way to boost your immune system.

You may find though that as winter draws in you may not be eating as much fruit as you do in summer. In that case, let’s look at other ways to get your daily vitamin C boost with a recipe for a fruit smoothie.

Winter is citrus fruit season in South Africa, so keep an eye out for juicy grapefruit, naartjies, oranges and lemons.

Lemons

Lemon assists with digestion, hydration and prevents kidney stones. Lemon also flushes your body of toxins.

Apples


Not only are apples a great source of fibre, but they can also help you get healthier whiter teeth. Apples are helpful for constipation and contain the antioxidant quercetin that helps boost your immune system and reduce stress.

Oranges


It’s no secret this sweet juicy fruit is loaded with vitamin C but did you know oranges contain vitamin A which is great for your eyesight? The carotenoid in oranges contains vitamin A which keeps your eyes healthy and absorbs light.

Bananas


Bananas are your golden ticket to a variety of vitamins and fibre. Moderating your blood sugar levels, bananas help you feel fuller for longer. They can also help reduce any muscle soreness after exercise.

    Get your daily fruit intake with this delicious orange and banana smoothie.

    Ingredients

    • 2 bananas, chopped and frozen (preferably quite ripe as the banana will be sweeter)

    • 120 ml raw oats

    • 250 ml strawberry yogurt

    • 90 ml orange juice

    • 125 ml chopped apple

    • 100 ml milk

    • 10 ml of lemon juice

    Method

    • In a blender add bananas, oats, orange juice and apples and blend to a liquid consistency but not smooth as you still want the texture of the oats.
    • Add remaining yogurt, milk, lemon juice and ice and pulse until everything is combined.
    • Transfer into a tall glass and enjoy for breakfast.
