Kimberley: SAPS officers arrested after robbing store for cigarettes
Two lawless cops are facing the full might of the justice system this week, after they were arrested for holding up a small store in Kimberley, Northern Cape – just so they could plunder cigarettes. One of the officers was allegedly still in uniform when the crime was committed, and they were aided and abetted by a member of the public.
Bad cops busted
SAPS released a statement on the matter over the weekend. Cigarettes are still banned in South Africa while Level 4 of lockdown is in place. But these law enforcement officials played by their own rules. According to a police spokesperson, the unruly officers robbed the store of both cigarettes and a substantial amount of cash:
“Two police officers from Roodepan police station – in the company of their civilian accomplice – stormed a local tuckshop in Kimberley and robbed the owner of an undisclosed amount of cash; 25 cartons of cigarettes were also robbed. It is alleged one of the police officers was wearing police uniform during the robbery.”
“The three suspects were arrested on Sunday by members of the Trio Task Team assisted by Public Order Police, Search and Rescue, SAPS Roodepan and SANDF. The two police officers were arrested at their place of work and their accomplice was arrested at his residence in Roodepan.”

Kimberley: Court action looms for cigarette thieves
All in all, things have not panned out well for the troublesome trio:
- Three suspects will appear before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges of business robbery.
- The cash and cigarettes have since been recovered and confiscated.
- The Provincial Commissioner reiterated that officers involved in crime will not be spared the full might of the law, saying that he would ensure “rotten police officers are exposed and sent to jail where they belong.”
