ICC Test Rankings: De Kock and Wood rise in latest standings
Quinton de Kock made significant gains in the ICC Test Rankings after the final Test against England in Johannesburg.
De Kock makes his charge due to his bold but ultimately futile innings in the 191-run defeat that consigned the Proteas to a 3-1 series defeat.
De Kock still highest ranked Proteas batsman
The Proteas wicketkeeper claimed his 200th Test dismissal in Johannesburg and moved back towards the top 10 for batsmen after his scores of 76 and 39 took him up two places to 11th. His Proteas teammate Anrich Nortje gained 20 places to reach 53rd position on the bowlers’ rankings.
Vernon Philander retired as the fifth-ranked all-rounder and 11th among bowlers after a decade-long career that saw him top both lists. Philander has retired from the international game and signed on as a Kolpak player for English County Somerset.
Philander spent 11 Tests as the top-ranked Test bowler between December 2013 and February 2014. He took over from Dale Steyn after taking four for 61 and three for 68 against India at Johannesburg in December 2013. That performance brought him up to 912 rankings points, which is the joint-seventh best of all time, and the best for a South Africa bowler.
Wood was named Player of the Match at the Wanderers and has moved up 19 places to 38th position among bowlers after he claimed figures of nine for 100. The England quick also progressed to 142nd from 151st among batsmen after scores of 35 not out and 18 in his 15th Test match.
Man of the series Ben Stokes gained two slots to reach 27th on the rankings for Test bowlers.
Three Lions batsmen Ollie Pope also moved up the rankings climbing six places to 55th while opener Dom Sibley progressed nine places to hold 67th in the latest update.
The update also takes into account the drawn second Test between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in Harare.
Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza’s Man of the Match effort in Harare helped him advance in the rankings. Raza took eight wickets, including a seven-wicket haul in the first innings, a performance that lifts him 21 places to 51st among bowlers. With the willow in hand, knocks of 72 and 34 see him rise to 57th among batsmen. Zimbabwe wicketkeeper-batsman Brendan Taylor has moved up to 22nd and skipper Sean Williams to 61st.
Sri Lanka’s match-saving hero Kusal Mendis’s fighting 116 took him to 23rd position from 26th before the match.
