Twitter pokes fun at Chiefs and Pirates after TKO trophy is stolen

The South African Police Service have now recovered a replica of the Telkom Knockout Trophy that was stolen along with 49 tickets to the final in Durban this week but that hasn’t stopped Twitter users from jumping on the bandwagon.

A Toyota Quantum was stolen at gun-point from bed and breakfast in Goble Road and later found abandoned with the trophy and tickets still inside.

Quick-witted South Africans seized on the opportunity to poke fun at Soweto Giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates who are both suffering multi-year trophy droughts, claiming Amakhosi or Bucs fans must have been behind the theft of the silverware.

Chiefs and Pirates the butt of the joke on Twitter

A tongue-in-cheek Twitter poll pegged the fans of Chiefs and Pirates as most likely to have nicked the cup.

Some wondered what the thieves hoped to do with the trophy had they managed to get away with the theft.

One of the Twitterati joked that the trophy was being used to drink beer in a tavern, despite the trophy’s design not really lending itself to being a receptacle.

One user got creative with an old photo of the arrest of someone wearing a Kaizer Chiefs shirt.

The actual Telkom Knockout Cup trophy has always been safe and sound and will be on display at Moses Mabhida on Saturday as Sundowns and Maritzburg United do battle for the honour of lifting it.

SAPS Statement on trophy theft

“It is alleged that this morning at 04:00, unknown men held up security guards at a bed and breakfast on Goble Road and stole a Toyota Quantum. Police were immediately alerted and the Provincial Vehicle Task Team as well as tracking company responded swiftly to the report of robbery.

“The police officers gave chase and the vehicle was found abandoned at D Section in Lindelani. When police found the vehicle they discovered a Telkom Knockout Trophy and 49 tickets to Saturdays final inside the vehicle. Officials at Telkom have confirmed that the trophy is a replica used for promoting the event. A case of robbery is being investigated by Berea SAPS.

“I am pleased with the speed response of our police officers in recovering the stolen vehicle as well as replica trophy. I am confident that the suspects will be caught soon,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.
