Additional reporting by wires/agencies/SA Rugby. Live updates appear below the preivew.
There were some notable upsets on day one of the 2019 Cape Town Sevens, which have set us up for an intriguing day two. South Africa have a tough day ahead with fixtures against Fiji and USA, the top two teams from last season’s World Series.
South Africa did not fall foul of an upset on day one as they cruised past Japan 49-0. This sets them up nicely for their Pool A clash with Fiji at 13:51.
Other major sevens teams were not so lucky. The first men’s match on Friday saw Ireland shock Australia 26-21 before Kenya beat Samoa 24-19 in the other Pool D clash. The top two teams will progress in the Cup and Kenya and Ireland have each given themselves a fighting chance.
Scotland are another team to watch, having pulled off a shock in Pool C, beating Dubai Cup semi-finalists England 26-24.
The first two games of Day Two will see Australia take on Kenya at 10:57 and Samoa face Ireland at 11:19.
Scotland face another tough opponent in France at 12:01 before England look to bounce back against minnows Spain at 12:23.
New Zealand and Argentina are in the driving seats in Pool B and will look to consolidate that. Argentina face Wales and New Zealand play Canada before we head into fixtures from the Blitzboks’ Pool A.
USA were outclassed 28-14 by Fiji and are in danger of dropping out of Cup contention. All they can do is beat Japan at 13:29 and the Blitzboks at 20:03 and hope for the best.
