Celebrations come to an end, what’s next for the Springboks?

The Rugby World Cup winning Springbok squad is likely to spend the next month resting up after an incredibly demanding year. In addition to an outstanding World Cup performance, which culminated in a final victory of England, the Springboks played eight matches since November 2018 under the tutelage of coach Rassie Erasmus.
With the Webb Ellis trophy safely back on South African soil, what does the future hold for the Springbok squad of 2019?
Many players will return to club rugby, both locally and internationally, in the new year. The Super Rugby tournament kicks off in January, with European leagues starting a bit earlier.
Willie le Roux, Cheslin Kolbe, Damian de Allende, Handre Pollard, Faf de Klerk, Duane Vermeulen, Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager will ply their trade overseas.
Erasmus, who stepped down as Springboks coach shortly after their World Cup victory, will still continue in his role as Director of South African Rugby.
The next time the class of ’19 is likely to reunite under the South African flag will be in July 2020, when the mid-year test window reopens.

Rain set to relieve drought-stricken areas

Rainfall forecast for various parts of the country will be welcomed with open eyes amid South Africa’s looming national water crisis. The dry Karoo landscape surrounding Oudtshoorn is expected to get a spattering, while heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for the Garden Route, particularly between Plettenberg Bay and Cape St Francis.
Further north, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng are due to get a fair dose of rain and thunderstorms. Even Kimberley stands a chance of drizzle.
While downpours will be welcomed by thirsty citizens, it’s unlikely that this week’s weather will break any significant droughts which are currently embattling the country. The relief, however, is likely to raise dam levels, thereby keeping the crisis at bay, at least momentarily.

Africa Investment Forum continues in Sandton

The investments concluded during last year’s Africa Investment Forum and which have since been realised, are the clearest indication that the continent is open for business.
This was emphasised by President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, during his address on Monday at the first day of the second Africa Investment Forum, taking place in Sandton, Johannesburg.

“Africa is ready to absorb more investments,” he said. “The risk perceptions from the continent, while high, are often exaggerated. And they do not often match what data shows and return performance on investment.”

A Moody’s investment service report on project bank loans financed between 1983 and 2016, shows that Africa has one of the lowest project default rates in the whole world.

“This is much, much lower than Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe, North America and Oceania.  Yet, investments are tilted to regions with much higher default rates. So it’s not about real risks or other passive risks,” he said.

Home Affairs relaxes travel requirements for child tourists

Home Affairs Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has signed a waiver that allows foreign children to enter the country without carrying additional supporting documents such as birth certificates and consent letters.
The waiver has been applicable since 8 November 2019 – after the Minister’s signature.

“This improvement in our admissions policy builds on the work the department has been doing to contribute to economic growth and investment.
“As of [8 November 2019], foreign children can enter and depart the country without being required to provide birth certificates, consent letters and other supporting documents relating to proof of parentage,” Motsoaledi said.

The Department of Home Affairs has communicated the changes to immigration officials at all ports of entry and to the airline and maritime industries. (Source: SAnews)

Kolisi thanks SA for unbelievable support on Trophy Tour

Springbok skipper Siya Kolisi thanked the South Africans from all walks of life who came out in their hundreds of thousands to congratulate the Boks on winning the Rugby World Cup in the last week.
The Springboks arrived home from Japan on Tuesday and visited Pretoria, Johannesburg, Soweto, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town with a Trophy Tour victory parade in the last five days.
An exhausted but immensely proud Kolisi thanked his fellow South Africans for the amazing support shown to the Springboks since they were crowned RWC champions in Tokyo on Saturday, 2 November.

MSL T20: Morris magic helps NMB Giants tame Jozi Stars

Chris Morris starred with bat and ball as the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants inflicted a second successive loss on defending champions the Jozi Stars in their opening match of the Mzansi Super League (MSL) season in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
The SA all-rounder first blasted a valuable 20 off 11 balls, before sending down some key overs at the death to finish with one for 20 as the hosts won by 24 runs at St George’s Park.
