Port Elizabeth: SAPS roll-out emergency plans after taxi driver murdered
Lusidiso Cakwebe was gunned down while driving his own taxi this week, after a botched robbery attempt ended in tragic circumstances. The 30-year-old was shot in the thigh, as two suspects fled the scene in Port Elizabeth.
The driver picked up his assailants at 17:00 on Monday afternoon. One of the alleged murderers hopped in at Missionvale Road. His accomplice was already in the vehicle beforehand, and the heist took place a few minutes later. Cakwebe’s girlfriend was also one of the passengers, and she escaped unharmed.

SAPS have since initiated their 72-hour emergency activation plan in a bid to bring the crooks to justice. Extra staff and more research powers have been granted to local authorities. SAPS released a statement on the matter, explaining the situation in greater detail:
“As they were driving in Port Elizabeth, one of the male’s at the back produced a firearm and informed the others that they are being robbed. Cash from the back-seated male passenger was taken. One suspect was seated as a front passenger. The suspects demanded cash from Cakwebe.”
“The victim’s girlfriend proposed to withdraw cash at Kenako Mall but the suspects opted to go to the Caltex Garage at Bethelsdorp Road. The vehicle stopped in Bethelsdorp Road opposite the garage and the girlfriend went into garage and returned with no money.”
“Cakwebe grappled with the suspect with the firearm and two shots went off. The suspects tried to drive the car but when it stalled, they abandoned it and ran off. Cakwebe sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his upper thigh and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”
