Petrol price for December 2019: Here’s what it’ll cost to fill up your tank
South Africa looks set to end the year true to form. Another petrol price increase is on the cards, according to the latest forecasts from the Central Energy Fund and the AA. We’re yet to receive final confirmation on next month’s official costs, but the early indicators don’t look too promising for December.
Confirmed petrol price for December 2019
It’s a game of two halves for next month. Although there is obvious relief for diesel and paraffin consumers, the large majority of motorists use petrol – and the forecast increase for 93 and 95 grades stands at 11 cents per litre.
- Petrol (both grades): Increase of 11 cents per litre.
- Diesel: Decrease of 18 cents per litre.
- Paraffin: Decrease of 21 cents per litre.
Subtracting these totals from November’s fuel price gives us the following average cost-per-litre for petrol and diesel. These prices will take effect in the first week of December:
Fuel | Forecast inland price (from December 2019) |
Forecast coastal price (from December 2019) |
Change in price |
Petrol | R16.19 | R15.54 | Up 11 cents |
Diesel | R14.52 | R13.95 | Down 18 cents |
Why is the petrol price forecast to rise in December?
The AA’s figures, released earlier in November, point to a stagnating rand-to-dollar value and static oil markets – which have effectively taken a decrease off the table. Although ZAR has staged a recovery against its American counterpart, it doesn’t look like it’ll be enough to turn the tide in favour of Mzansi’s motorists.
“Petrol price increases at this time of year will come as bad news for many people who will be travelling on holiday in December. However, the predicted drop for diesel means input costs in the manufacturing and agricultural sectors remains relatively untouched in relation to fuel costs, which is good news.”
