At least five people have lost their lives in a Mpumalanga road accident. According to ER24, the crash occurred on Monday, 27 December on the N4 Schoemanskloof Road in Poplar Creek.
Four other people have been injured, including two children – one of them a toddler.
“ER24 and other services arrived on the scene at 13h50 to find two wrecked light motor vehicles in the middle of the road. On closer inspection, medics found two adults lying trapped inside the one vehicle while three other adults were lying a few metres away. A boy believed to be 11-months old and a girl, believed to be three years old, was also found a few meters away from the car,” said ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring.
MPUMALANGA ROAD CRASH: AUTHORITIES STILL INVESTIGATING
For now, the circumstances surrounding what led to the Mpumalanga car accident remain unclear, but authorities are still investigating. ER24 confirmed that those who killed in the crash were in the same vehicle. The occupants of the second vehicle, however, sustained injuries, some quite serious.
As to the conditions of the children in the road accident, ER24 says the toddler was critical and had to be attended to immediately.
“The boy was found to be in a critical condition, while the girl and two adults from the second car had sustained only minor injuries. Medics treated the patients and provided the boy with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the patients were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent care. The details surrounding this incident are unknown, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations”

Road accidents are sadly common during this time of the year. The vehicle crash comes less than a week after Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula released the stats on the number of people who have lost their lives on the road.
“We have seen a 142% spike in crashes with multiple fatalities, resulting in 17 such crashes for far this year compared to 7 over the same period. The number of fatalities from major crashes also increased from 34 last year to 111 this year,” Mbalula said.
