NPA: Investigating Directorate head Hermione Cronje RESIGNS
Advocate Hermione Cronje – head of the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Investigating Directorate (ID) has resigned from her post. Reasons for her decision are not clear at this point and her resignation is effective from 1 March 2022.
Despite leaving office well before her term ends, NPA Head Advocate Shamila Batohi says she supports Cronje’s request and will ask President Cyril Ramaphosa to formally accept her resignation.
Cronje was appointed to lead the corruption-busting unit back in 2019.
“This will enable a swift and responsible transition, which will ensure that the ID’s work continues uninterrupted. Advocate Cronje has indicated the reasons for her decision and I fully understand,” Batohi is quoted as having written in an email to staff, News24 reports.
A new ID HEAD TO BE RECRUITED
In the meantime, Shamila Batohi told staff that deputy NDPP Adv Ouma Rabaji-Rasethaba would support Hermione Cronje during the transition period. Batohi says a recruitment process for a new ID head would also get underway, but it isn’t clear when.
The NPA is expected to shed some light on Cronje’s exit during a media briefing on Monday.
“After a challenging first start-up phase, Adv Cronje will leave the ID well-positioned to deliver on its important mandate. I am confident, given all the ground work that has been done, that its work will continue unaffected, in the coming months”

Batohi has nothing but praise for Cronje and has even thanked her for her hard work as well as sacrifices she made in setting up and positioning the ID to bring to justice those most responsible for corruption in the country.
“Adv Cronje’s commitment to justice and to holding those responsible for corruption to account has always been clear. Indeed, it is something that brought us together and will continue to be a commitment that we will always share”
