‘I feel very excited’: Cape Town’s soon-to-be mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis

With the DA having bagged at least 59% of the votes in the City of Cape Town, it’s safe to say the party’s Geordin Hill-Lewis is the next mayor. Hill-Lewis, who is set to take over the reins from the Dan Plato, already has big plans for when he comes into office in the next few weeks. Before beginning his campaigning for the city’s mayorship, Hill-Lewis had been fully immersed in his position as the DA’s shadow minister of finance.

“It’s my absolute pleasure to announce that our election projections now show we can say with a great deal of confidence that voters have returned the DA to government with a convincing majority in the City of Cape Town,” Hill-Lewis said to reporters at the provincial results and operations centre in Century City, Cape Town.

Further speaking about the DA’s electoral victory in the Western Cape’s only metro, Geordin Hill-Lewis says as a party, they appreciate the endorsement and faith from voters. Hill-Lewis says their goal is to make sure that residents have no regret over voting for the DA.

“Our purpose in government is simple: to improve the living conditions of the poorest residents, to roll back poverty, to spread opportunity, to grow the economy, to deliver excellent basic services, to inspire optimism, and to be an example to the country.”

At age 34, Hill-Lewis’ rise to the mayor’s office will make him the youngest person to ever lead the Mother City.

The first order of business once in office? Ending load-shedding.

“When I launched my campaign to be elected as Cape Town’s next mayor, over two months ago, I announced right up front that I am committed to ending load shedding in Cape Town over time,” said Hill-Lewis.
