Mkhize purchased the PSL status of Bloemfontein Celtic (for a reported R50 million), renamed the club Royal AM and relocated the side to KwaZulu-Natal ahead of the current season.

On the field of play, Royal AM have been in terrific form and currently lie third in the standings after six matches.

Their most notable performance to date came against Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs whom they hammered 4-1 at Amakhosi’s once fortress FNB Stadium.

Much of their success has been thanks to star striker Victor Letsoalo who has found the back of the net on no fewer than five occasions and is currently the joint-top goalscorer in the PSL this season.

The 28-year-old has scored five of Royal AM’s league-leading 12 goals this season.

His form caught the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos who has named the Royal AM star in his starting line-up during the recent 2022 Soccer World Cup qualifiers.

Besides calling him ‘Victor Letswalo’, she suggested he scored the winning goal in Bafana Bafana’s 1-0 victory over Ethiopia at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The only goal of the match in the 11th minute was officially an own-goal by former Bidvest Wits and University of Pretoria striker Getaneh Kebede.

Bafana Bafana are indeed top of Group G with just two matches to play. They have 10 points, one ahead of Ghana, while Ethiopia (3) and Zimbabwe (1) have been eliminated from contention.

South Africa will play Zimbabwe at home and then travel to Ghana to conclude their group matches next month.

Only the 10 groups winners will progress to the next phase of qualifying which will ultimately determine the five countries who will represent Africa at next year’s World Cup in Qatar.
