He was admitted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Scotland on Saturday after testing positive for COVID-19, according to the Scotsman, but died late on Tuesday.

Renton Laidlaw also worked for a number of different media outlets while he edited the R&A Golfer’s Handbook for more than a decade.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of Renton Laidlaw’s passing,” a statement from the R&A read.

“With his distinctive Scottish voice, Laidlaw was one of golf’s most respected broadcasters and journalists, and provided great service and dedication to the sport.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”

Renton Laidlaw had been involved in the Association of Golf Writers since 1963, serving several roles including secretary, chairperson and president – the latter job for 10 years before he stood down in 2015.

A regular on the BBC and the US Golf Channel, 1999 Open winner Paul Lawrie said on Twitter: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Renton Laidlaw a lovely man. RIP.”

Fellow Scottish golfer Stephen Gallagher added: “Just heard the very sad news that Renton Laidlaw has passed away he was an absolute gentleman the true voice of golf.”
