Joburg firefighter still missing at Klipdrift Dam, search to continue

The search operation for the firefighter who went missing when his boat capsized on Thursday at the Klipdrift Dam will resume on Saturday morning. 

THE 44-YEAR-OLD JOBURG FIREFIGHTER WAS ON AN OUTING WITH FRIENDS

According to the spokesperson of the City of Joburg Emergency Services Nana Radebe Kgiba, the firefighter missing is Takalani Makhavhu.

“The 44-year-old firefighter/EMT based at Eldorado Park Fire Station was fishing with his crew members when strong wind capsized his canoe at the Klipdrift Dam in Potchefstroom.”

Kgiba said the City’s Aquatic Rescue Unit has been on the scene to assist with the search.

“The South African Police Service Search & Rescue and the City’s Aquatic Rescue Unit will this morning resume the search.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Makhavhu family during this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, the search operations for the missing six-year-old boy on the North Coast have been scaled back, and searches will be conducted intermittently or initiated upon positive sitings. 

“THIS IS THE NORMAL COURSE OF ACTION.”

The  IPSS Medical Rescue said it is the normal course of action for prolonged incidents of this nature. 

“We wish to thank the many people and services who came out to assist in searching. We extend our sympathy to the affected.” 

The six-year-old boy went still missing at sea on Saturday, 21 August 2021, after the child went for a swim with his mother.

A search and rescue operation was mobilised in an attempt to locate the little boy.
