Severe Weather Alerts
IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS:
- Yellow Level 1 Warning for Rain leading to localised flooding of formal and informal settlements, roads and low-lying areas expected in the Mossel Bay, George, Knysna and Bitou Municipalities of the Western Cape, as well along the South Coast and adjacent interior of the Eastern Cape.
- Orange level 5 Warning for disruptive snow resulting in traffic disruptions and closure of most passes and some communities temporarily inaccessible, expected over the high lying areas of the Eastern Cape from the afternoon.
FIRE DANGER WARNINGS:
- Extremely high FDI values expected over the south-eastern parts of the North-West Province and the north-eastern parts of the Free State.
ADVISORIES:
- Very cold conditions are expected to set in over the southern interior of Namakwa District in the Northern Cape, the Central Karoo, the Cape Winelands and the interior of Garden Route in the Western Cape, persisting into Friday, spreading to the eastern and central parts of the Northern Cape by Friday evening into Sunday morning. This includes the western parts of the Free State, the western parts of the Eastern Cape, spreading across the EC Province on Friday into Saturday, while
spreading to the high lying areas of KZN, reaching the central and eastern Highveld and the escarpment areas of Mpumalanga. The public and small stock farmers are advised to take necessary precautions. - Significant rainfall amounts exceeding 30mm in 24 hours are expected over the eastern Northern Cape on Saturday with more rainfall expected on Sunday, which can contribute to difficult driving conditions.
- Light snowfall expected over the southern parts of both the Northern Cape and Free State from Friday evening until Saturday morning.
Gauteng:
Temperature: Fine and cool.
The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Very high.
Mpumalanga:
Temperature: Fine and cool but warm to hot in the Lowveld. It will be windy in places on the Highveld.
Limpopo:
Temperature: Fine and warm but hot in the southern Lowveld.
North-West Province:
Temperature: Fine, windy and cool, but warm in the north-east.
Free State:
Temperature: Partly cloudy in the west at first, otherwise fine, windy and cool, but cold in the south. It will become partly cloudy in the extreme east in the evening.
Northern Cape:
East temperature: Fine and cool in the extreme north-east, otherwise cloudy to partly cloudy and cold. It will be cloudy in the west and south with isolated showers and rain by the afternoon. Snowfall can also be expected over the southern high ground by the evening, where it will be very cold. It will be windy in places.
Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate northerly to north-westerly, becoming fresh to strong south-easterly in the south by mid-morning spreading to the alexander bay by early afternoon.
Western Cape:
Temperature: Fine over the Central Karoo at first, otherwise cloudy to partly and cold to very cold with scattered to widespread rain showers, clearing from the west by the afternoon. Snowfall can be expected over the high lying areas in the eastern parts from the afternoon, with localised flooding in the eastern parts of the Garden Route.
Wind: The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north-westerly east of Overberg at first while light to moderate northerly to north-westerly in the
extreme north at first until mid-morning, otherwise fresh to strong southerly
to south-easterly, moderating over the eastern parts of the south coast by the
evening.
The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Moderate.
Eastern Cape:
The Western half – Temperature: Fine and cool to warm, becoming partly cloudy west of Port Alfred during the evening.
The Western half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh westerly to north-westerly, becoming southerly to south-westerly by the afternoon, but fresh to strong westerly by late evening.
The Eastern half – Temperature: Fine and cool to warm.
The Eastern half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be light to moderate northerly to north-westerly, becoming easterly to north-easterly by the afternoon, but fresh to strong south-westerly by the evening.
Kwazulu-Natal:
Temperature: Fine and warm but cool in the south-west.
Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-easterly.
The expected UVB Sunburn Index: High.
