R350 grant: What happens if SASSA declines my application?

Friday marked the first day of the R350 grant becoming available to applicants once more. The popular SRD payment has been brought back by SASSA, after the government found R27 billion to fund the handouts until March 2022. However, some of those registering their details may have their appeals rejected in the coming days.

SASSA applicants encounter technical problems on Friday

SASSA has very strict criteria for those who can claim the R350 grant, based on employment status, age, and financial situations. However, millions of struggling South Africans still qualify for the funding – and it seems demand for the cash lifeline is already through the roof.

That’s because the SASSA website for R350 grant applications crashed earlier on Friday, and the agency was forced to open up alternative channels for potential beneficiaries to file their claims. There has been a raft of complaints about site failures and overblown loading times, ensuring some citizens were left to battle technical glitches throughout the day.

What happens if my R350 grant application is rejected?

Ultimately, however, perseverance should pay off for the majority. The system may have a few gremlins lurking inside, but once processed by SASSA, the R350 grant will be authorised ‘before the end of this month’. Not everyone will be successful, though – and if your application does get rejected, these will be the next steps in the process:

  • Through the contact details provided to SASSA, applicants will be notified of any unsuccessful appeals.
  • If your R350 grant application has been denied, you can appeal the decision online.
  • To challenge any decision, rejected beneficiaries have to visit https://srd.sassa.gov.za/.
  • Act fast, because you only have 30 days from the date of rejection to lodge your appeal.
  • You need to start a NEW appeal for EACH declined application – nothing will be done automatically.
