Mother of teen manhandled by police asks IPID to STOP PROBE

It has now been learnt that the mother of the 18-year-old woman who was seen being manhandled by a police officer in Krugersdorp, in the West Rand, has asked the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) to not look into the matter anymore.

The woman was seen in a shocking 30-second clip that made the rounds on social media last week, screaming for help as a police officer pins her against an unmarked vehicle then shoves her inside.

Ipid said the mother and daughter opted not to press criminal charges against the officers involved, but could not get into the details.

“Initially, we suspected that there was victimisation, but we realised that there is no such. It’s just that the mother said she wanted to be respected in this situation and they have agreed not to take the matter further,” Ipid’s executive director Jennifer Ntlatseng is quoted as having told Eyewitness News.

The news outlet is further reporting that the teenage girl was being arrested for refusing to wear a mask, but that is yet to be confirmed by Ipid. The officers involved are not off the hook yet as Ntlatseng said they are going to leave the docket open for now, in case the alleged victim changes her mine.

The incident sparked outrage amongst many who saw it online and was considered another example of police being heavy-handed towards civilians. It is believed to have taken place at the Krugersdorp CBD on Tuesday, 3 August.

Police then said they were able to identify the officers captured in the video and Gauteng acting provincial commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni has sanctioned a departmental investigation into the incident. They discovered that the high school pupil was taken to the Krugersdorp Police Station and released into the care of her mother on the same day of the incident.
