Mixed reaction as Malema promises ‘spacious’ housing for all

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) ‘Commander-in-Chief’, Julius Malema, commemorated Women’s Day in 2021 by handing over several houses to grandmothers “in need” in an undisclosed region of South Africa. The political party shared photographs of their generosity to their social media pages and promised that more would follow if they came into power.

MALEMA: ‘OUR PEOPLE MUST HAVE QUALITY HOUSES’

Malema and the EFF announced the handing over of the houses on Sunday, 8 August. The picture post said that quality houses directly relates to women’s dignity as many households across South Africa are headed by matriarchs.

“When we say our people must have quality houses, we are speaking of women dignity as many households are women headed,” said Malema.

“The EFF government will provide such quality, spacious houses to all the people.”

The message received thousands of reactions, likes and shares. A large majority of the replies were sceptical about the sustainability of providing the pictured houses to all, while others called on the EFF to create job opportunities instead of “freebies.” There were some who chose to poke fun at the construction work itself.

“This anyone can do,” said one Twitter user. “How is the EFF planning to create jobs and a vibrant economy? People want opportunities not freebies.”

“Great job building the house. If you could tell us how you would raise the money to build everyone houses like that, that’d be great,” said another.

“Thank you EFF. At least you are paying back the grannies by using their own VBS funds.”

“Haters in this comment section have chest pains. Thank you EFF, carry on doing the good work. We’ll vote for y’all in the next elections.”

“Honestly, I think it’s unrealistic to rollout such big houses at scale. So 1 or 3 is possible but hundreds, is a pipe dream. But we should provide assistance and houses to the masses.”
