Just in: Zuma trial ‘to be postponed’ – due to his ill-health
The Jacob Zuma Foundation has issued a statement on Monday morning, revealing that both the former President’s legal team AND the NPA will seek a postponement for his upcoming appeal in the Pietermaritzburg High Court. Msholozi remains in hospital, after being admitted to a facility last week.
What is wrong with Jacob Zuma?
Zuma’s ill-health shows no sign of improving any time soon. The 79-year-old’s clandestine ailments have proved troublesome for his corruption trial before. In February 2020, an arrest warrant was issued for uBaba, after he missed a hearing in the High Court due to the fact he was receiving medical treatment at the time.
According to the JGZ Foundation, there will be a joint approach made by both legal teams to have the trial pushed back from its date of Tuesday 10 August – meaning Zuma will have to wait before making a recusal case against Advocate Billy Downer. Just five days ago, the ex-ANC leader won the right to have his application heard in-person.
“Following last night’s confirmation by the Dept of Correctional Services that former President Jacob Zuma is still in hospital, the Foundation has learned that his and the NPA legal teams are discussing making a joint approach to the Judge for a postponement of this week’s proceedings in the [Pietermaritzburg] Court.”
Corruption trial ‘set to be postponed’
On Sunday night, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed that Zuma would remain in hospital for the time being. A routine health check-up, conducted on Friday, detected an issue that required inpatient treatment. JZ is currently receiving care from the SA Military Health Services, as per the benefits awarded to Mzansi’s former presidents.
