‘I should’ve pounced on a young, vulnerable MacG’ – Old Somizi clip sparks uproar

Oh no, this has come back to haunt Somizi: An old interview with MacG, though conducted in good humour, has still left a large number of South Africans reeling with his conduct. The celebrity personality held a no-holds-barred discussion with the podcast host in 2015 – but in hindsight, he may have crossed the line with some of his remarks.

Awkward comments from Somizi, MacG interview resurface

Somizi Mhlongo has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons recently. His marriage with partner Mohale is as good as done, after the TV host was accused of being abusive towards his spouse. This lead to Somizi taking a break from some of his contractual obligations, but this chat with MacG has become a real bone of contention.

While detailing the toughest time of his life, MacG admitted to slipping into depression after he was fired from one of his early presenting gigs. He told his guest that he kept himself occupied by drinking a lot and, we quote, ‘banging a lot of girls’. This is when his famous counterpart decided to dip his toes into some very murky waters…

Social media users register their disdain

Somizi’s language – where he openly talks about wanting to pounce on a young-looking MacG – is entirely problematic. Although the context of the full story does need to be taken into account, much of what he said back then does not fit well with ‘modern standards’, and some social media users have labelled his attitudes as ‘predatorial’.
