Covid-19 vaccination rolled out for Durban’s homeless

eThekwini Municipality has announced that it will start its roll out of Covid-19 vaccinations for homeless people in the city on Monday.

EThekwini Municipality said that its health unit’s Covid-19 vaccination programme would initially target homeless people with ID documents at various sites across the city.

The Covid-19 vaccination programme will be rolled out at the following sites in Durban starting on Monday 23 August:

  • The Jewish Hall on 23 August
  • The Strollers Building on 24 August
  • The Denis Hurley Centre on 25 August and
  • Block AK on Stamford Hill Road on 26 August.

“The vaccination of homeless people forms part of government’s programme to ensure all citizens have access to vaccines,” the eThekwini  Municipality said in a statement.

The government’s national Covid-19 vaccination rollout is now open to the public for all people between the ages of 18 and 34.

The city’s vaccination sites that were operational over the weekend  had included Pinetown Civic Centre from 7.30am to 3.30pm; Dassenhoek Hall from 8am to 4pm; KwaMashu Indoor Sports Centre from 7.30am to 4pm; Moses Mabhida Stadium People’s Park from 8am to 4pm; and Watercrest Mall undercover parking which was open on Saturday. An outreach vaccination centre was also held in the Cliffdale area over the weekend. 

The NMJ Community Hall in Hendry Road in Overport operated a drive through Covid-19 vaccination site from this weekend in partnership with the Department of Health.
