Chelsea started the game like a house on fire, dominating Villarreal from the first whistle with their slick passing.

It took 27 minutes for Chelsea to take the lead, and it was through Morocco international and attacker Yakim Ziyech

Ziyech would suffer a shoulder injury just before the interval, and Thomas Tuchel was forced to make a change, introducing Christian Pulisic in his place.

But before then, Gerard Moreno had given Chelsea a scare when he blasted his volley against the crossbar from close range.

The second half saw Chelsea take the foot off the pedal, and thus, allowing Villarreal to take control of the game.

The Spanish outfit didn’t create too many chances but their biggest chance came when Moreno finally beat Edouard Mendy in the 27th minute of the second half after some sloppy defending by Chelsea.

Neither side could find the winner in the remaining minutes, and the game had to go into extra time.

The extra 30 minutes produced very few goalscoring chances, and penalties were needed to determine the winner.

One notable substitution Chelsea made closer to full-time was replacing Mendy with former No.1 Kepa in preparation for the shootout.
