Charlotte Maxeke: Gauteng Health opens case after items were STOLEN

The Gauteng Department of Health has filed a theft case with the Hillbrow Police Station in Johannesburg after people apparently made off with several items belonging to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The hospital has been closed since April 2021 after a fire tore through parts of the facility. Patients were transported to other hospitals, while equipment was stored in several facilities.

“The opening of the case follows a reconciliation process to account for equipment and items taken to other facilities to ensure continuity of care. It was through this process that the missing items were identified prompting the hospital management to open a case of theft as the itemscould not be accounted for,” said spokesperson Motalatale Modiba.

The stolen items include: 10 desktop computers, (one) fridge, (six) plasma television sets and (three) laptops.

Charlotte Maxeke Hospital: Security still monitoring

The Gauteng Department of Health says since the blaze, they have not allowed anyone to enter Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and even roped in security to monitor the staff residence area and parameter fences of the hospital.

“The security personnel has since been redeployed to their original posts except in areas declared unsafe. Although the theft of the above-mentioned items will not have any major impact on service provision at the facility and no critical information was lost or compromised, the department of health, is nevertheless, concerned at the breach of security at CMJAH”

Gauteng’s Health MEC Dr Nomthemba Mokgethi has called on law enforcement to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those responsible for the theft are held accountable.

Mokgethi has further encouraged members of the public who may have information that could lead to police capturing the suspects, to come forward and assist.

Back in June, then acting Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital within a week, but that is yet to happen. Just recently, the facility became the victim of copper cable theft to the tune of R30 million.
