CONFIRMED: SASSA payments to resume from 19 July after suspension

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) cash pay points are expected to resume services from 19 July 2021 in all the areas that have been declared safe to operate. Payments at cash paypoints were previously suspended due to the escalating unrest in the country.

During his address to the nation on Friday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that government is working hard to bring all SASSA offices into operation.

SASSA TO RESUME PAYMENTS AT CASH PAYPOINTS

In a statement released on Monday, 12 July, SASSA said the Cash In Transit (CIT) industry informed them that they will not be providing any cash delivery services to SASSA cash pay points until further notice.

“Beneficiaries are urged to remain calm and await communication as to when the payment at pay points will resume. SASSA beneficiaries are reminded that their cards can be used to purchase goods or receive cash from merchants or bank ATMs.

“However, beneficiaries are urged to ensure that it is safe for them to frequent any of these facilities and to follow the COVID-19 protocols at all times.”

During his address, Ramaphosa said government is in the process of providing immediate food relief to households.

“We are targeting areas affected by the looting and where people have no access to food. Provincial Departments of Social Development and SASSA will use their remaining budget in the Social Relief of Distress programme to provide support in the form of food parcels, cash and food vouchers.

“To assist with the immediate needs of affected communities, the Solidarity Fund has established a Humanitarian Crisis Relief Fund to assist those in greatest need at this time. We are calling on all South Africans to support this fund. We appreciate the support of the many companies, organisations and faith-based groups that have already started providing support to families in distress.”

Ramaphosa added that social partners have been meeting to discuss a range of measures which can be implemented to provide immediate relief within fiscal means.

“This includes the provision of emergency food relief and other assistance to those in greatest distress,” he said.
