Warning: Several Johannesburg suburbs will be ‘waterless’ this week

No water, no electricity, and no happy customers. Following intense bouts of load shedding in Johannesburg, the long-suffering residents in some parts of the city now face the prospect of going ‘waterless’ in the days ahead.

Johannesburg water outages planned THIS WEEK

Three regions are on course for an 11-hour period without water, starting from Tuesday. Those living in each affected suburb will be required to source their own supply before their taps are taken offline. A planned tie-in to a new water system accounts for two outages, and a ‘replacement main’ is responsible for the other interruption.

NALEDI-LUSAKA, SOWETO

  • Date: The taps will be switched off for Seeiso Street, on Tuesday 15 June.
  • Time: From 9:00 to 20:00, the reticulation system will be offline.
  • Reason: This is to accommodate the newly installed pipeline, tying it into an existing mainline.

TSHEPISONG, NORTH SOWETO

  • Date: Locals are advised to note this will take place on Thursday 17 June.
  • Time: It’s an 11-hour stretch, and the suspension is in place from 9:00 to 20:00.
  • Reason: This is to accommodate the newly installed pipeline, tying it into an existing mainline.

DOORNKOP, ALONG THE R558

  • Date: Thursday 17 June has also been picked out as ‘disruption day’ here.
  • Time: There’s a slight adjustment, and water will be unavailable from 8:00 to 19:00.
  • Reason: The lowering of a new uPVC water main accounts for the interruption.

Load shedding may also disrupt the reticulation system

In a statement issued over the weekend, Johannesburg Water also revealed that there could be more ‘unplanned disruptions’ to the supply – brought on by load shedding. When the lights go out, the power needed to keep the reticulation system running smoothly is often lacking – and JW has asked the public to prepare accordingly.

“We ask residents to also kindly take note of load shedding schedules, and power outages can also affect the water supply. Residents are required to keep water in storage containers for drinking purposes. Locals are encouraged to subscribe to our website and SMS services for alerts on all service interruptions.”
